Julia Szymczak
Research Associate
Julia Szymczak began work with VIA in the summer of 2002 as a research intern. After graduating summa cum laude from Brandeis University in 2004, she joined the VIA research team full-time as a Research Associate. In the three years Julia has worked with VIA, she has acquired extensive experience with the VIA method and participates in both field work and data analysis. Her responsibilities include assisting the Analysis Coordinator manage and code the data using NVivo qualitative analysis software, serving as a liaison between the summer interns and the research team, assisting in the preparation of grant applications and recruiting, enrolling, and supporting participants while they make VIA visual illness narratives.

Julia’s research interests include qualitative methods, medical sociology, aging, health policy, and sociology of the body. In the summer of 2005, she presented a paper based on her thesis research at the International Visual Sociology Association annual meeting in Dublin, Ireland.
